A New South Wales man has been sentenced to three years in prison for importing a generic drug, after he claimed that he had been able to buy it from his own shop in South Africa.
Barry Tarrant, 24, pleaded guilty in August last year to five counts of importing and selling anabolic-hormone-containing drugs, including anabolic steroids and testosterone.
He was also ordered to pay $25,000 in criminal back pay.
Tarrant's case is part of a prosecution case that will be heard in the New South Wales State Court in Brisbane next month.
Tarrant, who is under a cloud of embarrassment when he was not diagnosed with cancer last year, said he had been able to obtain his own sexual enhancement supplements and other prescription drugs without being embarrassed.
"I was able to buy them online and I have been able to use them for more than 10 years," Tarrant told the Sun.
"They are a good and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction. I was able to take them with meals that I was eating or with something that was like chocolate."
The man, who was not under a cloud when he was not diagnosed with cancer last year, claimed he had been able to buy Viagra and other prescription drugs without being embarrassed.
The pair bought the pills under the name "Hoffmannstaedt" for $40 each.
Tarrant said he was aware of the sale of these drugs, which had been advertised on radio, television and newspapers.
He said he was also aware of a packet of 10 pills with the names of the suppliers, which he had been told he could get for as low as $3.
"I knew they were a good deal, I thought they would last a lot longer than I would have thought," Tarrant said.
Tarrant also said that the pills were being imported from China, and they had arrived from Europe and India.
"I did not know what they were."
He said that a pharmacist at the supermarket told him that the pills had been prescribed to him by a pharmacist.
"I thought I was taking them for my own benefit," Tarrant said.
Tarrant told the Sun that he had bought the pills in New Zealand and was told that the pills had been imported from China, but were being imported from China.
The prescription medicines were labelled as "Viagra" and contained testosterone. The drug is prescribed to men suffering from testosterone deficiency who do not have orrogenic anabolic steroids.
Tarrant said that he had not been advised of the risk to the health of his wife, but that he had discussed the risk with the man.
He was also told that the man would take the pills and that he was able to take them to his wife.
Tarrant said he had never taken steroids before.
"I would never have taken them if I had known I was using them," Tarrant said.
Tarrant, who is also being represented by a private law firm, said he would pay out of pocket.
"It is not a good law, I would not have taken them. I have no money."
Tarrant has since lost his licence to sell prescription drugs.
